Tutu Much-These Frocks Set the Barre High

Fashion is on pointe for fall.

Ballet flats have become wardrobe staples, and now we want the full fairy regalia. Tutus? Check. Strapless? Check. Headpiece? Check.

The toeshoes are optional.

Designers as different as Rei Kawakubo for Comme des Garcons (whose designs hit H&M in a few weeks) and New York up-and-comer Jason Wu all have visions of sugarplum fairies dancing in their heads.

For center stage, the classic ballerina-style dress and tulle skirt of the tutu are the pas de deux of the season. Headbands, either jeweled or feathered, are all the jewelry we need for a hands-free performance.

ABT's 2008 fall season, which starts tomorrow and runs till Nov. 2 at City Center, honors the centennial of Antony Tudor, one of the masters of 20th-century dance. Performances will include the pas de deux from Tudor's rarely seen one-act "Romeo and Juliet," along with his popular "Jardin aux Lilas," "The Leaves Are Fading," "Continuo," "Pillar of Fire," and a special performance of "Judgment of Paris."
