Last week the Washington Post published a story on the impending demise of Crocs, those bizarre gardening shoes that somehow wangled their way into the mainstream in a major way. From WaPo:
The company had expanded to meet demand, but financially pressed customers cut back. Last year the company lost $185.1 million, slashed roughly 2,000 jobs and scrambled to find money to pay down millions in debt. Now it's stuck with a surplus of shoes, and its auditors have wondered if it can stay afloat. It has until the end of September to pay off its debt."The company's toast," said Damon Vickers, who manages an investment fund at Nine Points Capital Partners in Seattle. "They're zombie-ish. They're dead and they don't know it."
To be honest, we're not even sure how this "trend" lasted this long...
My favorite photo from the shoot I styled at Allen & Delancey with photographer Elizabeth Lippman -- from today's Sunday paper. Sadly the photos aren't posted online, but... Here's my fave:
... even when shopping on "discount" websites. Or, especially when you think you're getting a deal on discount websites...
I like to use Shopstyle.com, which is like Google for clothes -- you can type in any search terms and if the products are available online, you can compare prices between stores. Check out these identical Balenciaga shoes -- on Yoox.com and Bluefly.com. I mean, it's about a $450 difference per pair! What's extra-crazy to me is that the prices that Bluefly lists as their MSRP is significantly higher than the price Yoox lists as MSRP. Heck, the Bluefly "discount price" is significantly higher than the MSRP on Yoox. Hmm, very interesting.
Not sure what to do with this information that legendary design company Kartell is making shoes... Click through...
Hear hear! Great mini-rant on the Daily Danny:
"I have a problem with restaurants, hotels, and stores that refuse to put a sign out telling people "you are at the right place." I can't even begin to tell you how many times I've walked up and down a street looking for a business only to be told on my phone to look for "an unmarked door." Please. Stop. Being hidden from the public doesn't make you cool. It makes you bankrupt."

The hottest accessory this season -- no, not the Chanel ankle purse -- the ankle monitoring device. Available in a chic matte black finish, custom-fitted for optimal comfort, so rare it's beyond limited-edition, it adds an air of mystique and danger to your look. It's a real conversation starter. We spotted this one at the LVMH celebration of the 40th anniversary of the lunar landing Monday night at the Museum of Natural History.
Buzz Aldrin (Apollo 11, first walk on the moon 1969) and Jim Lovell (commander of Apollo 13) spoke.
And cute displays of astronaut toys.
And our fencer bachelors were there! Tim Morehouse (left), Tim Garcia of Marc Jacobs and Jason Rogers. Morehouse and Rogers are everywhere these days, promoting fencing and stuff. Somebody sponsor these guys already!
