Styled to Death: The 69 Eyes

69Eyes1.jpg

About three years ago, NY Post TV/Music-writer Maxine Shen and I developed a mildly unhealthy obsession with Finnish "goth-n-roll" band the 69 Eyes. In fact, a huge poster of the lead singer, Jyrki69, still graces the wall of my cubicle at work. Someone once asked me if it was Asia Argento. Anyway, I always joke with my friends that I only like bands that look cool -- bands that are styled to death, like Maxine says in her NY Post Music Blog:

"The last time these guys made the US market rounds, Post Hi Lo fashion blogger Danica and I had a somewhat insane interlude where we were totally obsessed with the band, mostly due to their crazy sense of style. No matter what you think of the music, you've gotta give props to a band that puts this much effort into their look. It makes you almost not care about the way they sound."
Anyway, we haven't seen these guys in ages, but tonight they're hosting a listening party for fans at the East Village Arrow Bar from 6 to 9 p.m. where they'll be previewing their new album, "Back in Blood," which is set to drop Sep. 15. I don't know if I'm going, I'm slightly embarrassed, as I've seen the 69 Eyes play more times in my life than any other actually musically-acclaimed band. Is it wrong to love a band for strictly superficial, uh, accessories- and wardrobe-related reasons?

Laitinen SS10: Milan 23-June

June 9th, 2009 | Comments Off | Posted in

I'm heading to Milan men's week next week for the first time ever and right now I'm most excited to see the new Laitinen collection. There's nothing in the world really like Laitinen pieces -- I'm a huge fan and think Tuomas and Anna Laitinen, siblings and co-conspirators, are straight-up brilliant. They've yet to be bought by an American retailer, but the five-season-strong label is already a mainstay at luxury retailers in Paris such as Maria Luisa and Tokyo power retailer Midwest.

I've been following Tuomas' career for years, since we were on the Central St. Martins MA together. Some of my favorite Laitinen SS09 pieces:

And AW08 men's and women's:

The SS08 collection was definitely this label's break-out season. The prints and fringe were To. Die. For.

Roadtripping — around NYC, that is.

While I spend the next few days canvassing the five boroughs producing a story I'm working on for the print edition of the Post, check out the Luisa Via Roma semi-annual sale, where you can score hard-to-find pieces from labels like Demeulemeester, Anne Valerie Hash, Rick Owens, and Nicholas Kirkwood at up to 50 percent off.

Also, as many of you know, Spring Summer 2009 was eluxury.com's final retail season, which means they've got to dump their inventory and are having a fantastic sale right now...

“I’ve written about 3,000 pages, so either it’s more than one book or it needs a lot of editing. I’m in a race with Proust.”

If this is true, I might have a breakdown.

Diane Pernet is reporting a rumor in Paris that Karl Lagerfeld is out at Chanel and that Alber Elbaz is in. The rumor says that Olivier Theyskens will take over Lanvin. Freak out. Waiting to hear confirmation/denial...
